MATHEMATICS - How parents can help from home
At Haumoana School, we know that learning doesn’t stop when the bell rings — and your support at home can make a real difference to your child’s progress in maths.
Here are some simple and effective ways you can help:
Show your child that maths is useful and fun. Avoid saying things like “I was never good at maths” — confidence grows when we believe we can learn. Weekly Seesaw posts have infoirmation about the maths content being covered at school and what's been set for practice at home.
Look for chances to talk about numbers, shapes, time, and measurement — like:
Counting coins or saving pocket money
Cooking and using fractions in recipes
Telling the time and working out schedules
Estimating how much something weighs or how long something might take
Board games, dice games, card games, and puzzles all build number sense and strategic thinking — and they’re a great way to learn together.
Rather than focusing only on right or wrong answers, try asking:
“How did you work that out?”
“What do you think might happen if…?”
“Can you show me another way to solve it?”
This helps children build problem-solving skills and confidence in explaining their thinking.
Maths might look different to how you learned it — and that’s okay! If you're unsure about something, feel free to ask your child’s teacher. We’re always happy to help.
6. Support daily attendance when well
Maths happens every day at school- even on Fridays! One missed day is 20% of the maths learning that for that week. The bringing forward of expectations in the curriculum and the pace required to get trhough the curriculum means there's very little wriggle room for days off.
